Hello Considerate. You ask some very good questions including why would a practitioner use a painful laser hair removal device instead of one that is painless? The short answer is effectiveness. More painful lasers are generally more effective for medium and fine hair as higher fluences (energy) will be required to achieve permanent hair removal.

If you are South Asian (East Indian, Pakistani, etc.) you have multiple wavelength options. We believe Soprano would be the Diode (810 nm) laser, which is appropriate for your skin type, but must be used with caution with your skin type. The Alexandrite laser (755 nm) may be appropriate as well, but also carries more risk (and potentially more effectiveness when done well) than the diode. Finally, the Ng:Yg (Yag 1064 nm) laser is the safest laser for your skin type, but unless your hair is very coarse (like a man's leg hair), then you may not be a great candidate.

The Soprano painless (SHR) mode is used with coarser hair and is often chosen by the practitioner because it is fast for larger areas like the back and legs. But it is not as effective for medium or fine hair and so typically your practitioner will switch over to a more traditional slower speed mode when the coarse hair has been eliminated. Also, the slower speed mode is more appropriate for smaller treatment areas like the underarms, face and bikini.

Although it's difficult to understand for many consumers, the most important factor for the success of your results is not usually the technology (although there are limitations). The most important factor is the skill and experience of the person doing the treatment. Skill counts in laser hair removal as lasers cannot think for themselves and there are many settings to choose from to get the best outcome.
