My left breast expander is much higher than my right natural breast. Is this normal? (Photo)

Question

I had a left breast mastectomy and have an expander in place. Approx 100 cc of saline was injected one month post mastectomy. More injections will follow in the coming weeks. If I continue getting more saline to the desired outcome (C cup), then replace it with an implant, will left breast even out with the right breast? I plan to get an implant in the right breast too. My concern is how high left is currently and for future injections and implant.

Thanks for the great question.When reconstructing one side there is almost always considerable asymmetry during the expansion phase. Since there is another surgery to remove the expander and place a more "permanent" implant we have an opportunity to adjust most asymmetries. However, your left implant is riding quite high. I recommend you discuss this with your surgeon and get a  feel for his/her confidence of correcting the asymmetry at implant exchange. If there is enough concern (surgeon and/or patient) it would be reasonable to revise the left before too long. Another thing to consider is that augmentation of the right will slightly lower or at least accentuate the lower fold on that side making the left even harder to match. Talk to your surgeon and see what they say. Hope this helps.BRK
