I have a very small umbilical hernia. What could happen if I CoolSculpt the area? (photo)

Question

If I CoolSculpt would that cause inflammation of the hernia? My hernia is so small that the doctors could not diagnose me until I had an ultrasound of my abdomen done. I was also diagnosed with diastasis. Does that affect my treatment?

Coolsculpting over a hernia is not recommended. You could potentially make it worse. Have an experienced provider work around the area but not directly over. Best of luck!

Hello, thanks for the question.Do not do CS over a hernia.  There is suction applied through the CS applicator that can cause problems with the hernia.I recommend that you have your CS applicator applied only by a physician, not a nurse, tech, etc. to minimize your risk.Best of luck.Michael Kerin MDKerin MedSpa

CoolSculpting should not be performed over an area with an umbilical hernia because it could worsen the hernia or cause other problems.  The procedure could be performed on other areas not near the hernia though.

The current recommendation is to avoid CoolSculpting treatments over existing hernias. Some physicians will even go a step further and not treat over a repaired hernia. The risk lies in injuring the bowel with the suction itself or by the extreme low temperatures delivered by the applicator

Thank you for your message. CoolSculpting should not be performed over or near your hernia site. I would also recommend speaking with your primary care provider regarding your diastasis as CoolSculpting may make this worse as well, depending on the area you are looking to have CoolSculpting. Just so you know, CoolSculpting can also lead to hernias! I would speak with your primary care physician as well as a provider in your area, in person, so they are able to assess the area fully!

CoolSculpting cannot be performed over a hernia since it could make it worse. When considering CoolSculpting it is important to get your treatment done in a medical setting and with a certified physician evaluating your concerns.
