Smoking is probably to single greatest contributor to preventable plastic surgery complications. Smoking cigarettes increases complication rates for certain specific procedures. They are generally procedures where tissue is moved and skin and fat layers are separated from the underlying muscle layer. Specifically they include facelift, breast lift, breast reductions and tummy tucks. there’s also a host of reconstructive operations where flap surgery is done or smoking can have major negative consequences. They actually increase complication rates for smokers and Liposuction is not that high. Each provider will have their own policy. For high risk operations like a tummy tuck or breast reduction it makes total sense to simply say no and not do the surgery on smokers since major complication rates can be over 50%. Complications related to smoking include large areas of tissue necrosis that can leave massive deformity and take many months of wound care before patients are healed. Like I said earlier Liposuction is not affected by smoking as much as other plastic surgery procedures. I suggest having multiple in person consultations and which time you can discuss the specifics with each provider. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
