Numb ears and face after facelift

Question

Almost 1 yr post deep plane face/necklift, I have numbness and irritation around my ears and sides of face still. I also noticed changes in my skin, its rougher textured and has a very red mottled appearance which is definitely unusual for me. I was wondering if nerve damage is affecting my skin quality, and if it would be beneficial to use a TENS machine? I also have quite a bit of inflammation and pain still. Thanks.

Numbness around the ears is quite common, we could r3eccomend using some nerve regeneration such as vitamin B. The TENS machine do not recommended as it stimulates your muscles which does not stimulate the nerves. It can also take up to 2 years to regain your nerves. Always speak with your surgeon before starting any new remedies/treatments.

It is very difficult to answer your question, as it's impossible to know what exactly your surgeon did during your facelift surgery. In my practice, patients rarely experience pain:  they do, however, said that the bandages make them feel somewhat claustrophobic (these are removed after two days). Numbness lasts approximately 2 - 4 weeks in general. I've never noticed changes in skin texture unless I employ fat transplantation in addition to the surgery -- in which case, the skin looks significantly *better* as a result of the benefits of the fat transplantation. I would suggest speaking with your surgeon. We, as surgeons, should be very available to our patients to meet with them and help them with all aspects of the healing process. If your surgeon is not compassionate and discounts your questions and concerns, I would definitely seek a second opinion.
