Can I do a nose job under local anesthesia?

Question

I have a HUGE fear of being put under. However, I've been told that I might need a simple septoplasty procedure to fix my breathing out of my right nostril. There is no deviated bone, just cartilage twisted to the right. If this is a simple procedure, (no hump removal, bruising, etc can I do this under local anesthesia?

Local anesthesia or general anesthesia can both be used for nasal surgery.  Monitored anesthesia care or MAC is a level of anesthesia with no endotracheal tube and the patient balanced between enough consciousness to protect their own airway and general anesthesia. Using general anesthesia uses an airway so the patient cannot obstruct their airway. My choice is general anesthesia with an airway because I feel it is safer. The potential of losing the breathing airway is much lower when it is already protected. Surgery and anesthesia have risks. Make sure the risk of the procedure is worth the projected benefit of the procedure.

Dear Popoppy, A consultation will determine the exact surgical plan that is needed to correct your current concerns. Depending on your surgeon and his/her protocol will determine the type of anesthesia that will be used.
