Do you need to stop topical ointments before starting Accutane?

My son, 16 yrs old, has appointment with dermatologist next week to discuss starting Accutane treatment. Does he have to stop using the topical treatments (Retin A, amalactin) for any time period before starting Accutane?

Typically, topical acne treatments including retin-A do not need to be discontinued until he has actually been started on accutane (generic name: isotretinoin) treatment. Once he starts accutane, he will most likely experience dryness of his skin, lips and sometimes eyes because the mechanism of this medication is to eliminate oil production in the skin. If he were to continue his other topical acne medications, his skin would become even more dry and irritated. He will likely be instructed to use only oil-free moisturizers for the face, amlactin can be continued as a moisturizer for the body, and a thicker ointment for the lips such as vasoline or aquaphor. Hello!  There is no need for your son to discontinue his topical medication prior to starting Accutane.  Most likely he will be counseled to discontinue all topicals except for moisturizing emollients once he starts the oral medication.  Best wishes!
