My estimation is that it will probably take between 5-6 treatments. The most common side effects of laser hair removal are skin irritation at the site of treatment, redness, or swelling. Yes.....laser hair removal is wonderful  for eliminating ingrown hairs and bumps.  Just know that the hair loss will be permanent.  It might interfere with your ability to grow a beard in the future.  Perhaps you want to limit it to your neck. 

I typically perform 6 treatments, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. Most newer machines are not painful, but you can have a topical anesthetic  cream applied before (takes about 15 to 30 minutes to work) to assure comfort.
