Same dentitst had also asked me to remove stitches 7 days after he put my implant a couple of years ago, and the (other) dentist who took them out did it reluctantly because he thought the gums had not yet fully healed.

Dental implants require the same hygiene care as natural teeth. Dental implants can also develop gum disease, and get infected , specially in diabetics.
There are a few ways to improve this and none of my patients would ever accept this even temporarily as they would question my ability to finish the case satisfactory. Motivate your dentist do better as it obviously bothers you and I am sure they can improve as we all like happy patients...
