Is this hyperpigmentation permanent? Post chemical peel.

Hello. Last July I was using tea tree oil on my face and I noticed it removed the smile lines that my makeup always sunk into so I continued using it more in that area. Eventually the skin in that area flaked off then a week later it was BLACK. I recently got a chemical peel and it seems the spots got darker. I’m using tretinoin for the hyperpigmentation which is kind of helping but I’m just scared and annoyed at myself that this may be permanent.

It should lighten up with bleaching agents and sunscreen. It may take a couple months to see results. Best of luck!

Thank you for posting the photos.  Since the hyperpigmentation is due to irrigation after a product you have what is called post-inflammatory pigmentation.  You can definitely treat this with a combination of topical products such as Retin-A and I typically give a 5 or 8 percent hydroquinone in my office to patients who have this problem.  Strict sun avoidance is necessary.  Please consult an expert in this type of hyperpigmenation and the best treatment.  Best, Dr. Green
