Hi Josiah, I am sorry about your accident. A lot of kids chip one of their front teeth while playing with their friends and it is very common to see patients who are ready to start their orthodontic treatment, but have dental fillings on one or more of their teeth. The braces are glued (with a special dental glue) to the surface of your teeth, and if there is a filling on the tooth, we use a special glue to make the braces adhere to that surface. Having a dental filling will not interfere with your orthodontic treatment. There are only a couple of points you need to consider before you start your orthodontic treatment. 1) Once your treatment is completed, you might have to change that dental filling. In some cases, it is because the shape of the tooth is not ideal and once all your teeth are straight, you want the shape of all your teeth to match to get that PERFECT smile. In some other cases, the dental filling will change color or might chip a little when your orthodontist takes the braces off at the end of the treatment and it needs to be fixed. with big dental filling, I always warn my patients that they might have to change it when they are done with their treatment 2) Because you have had an accident and chipped that tooth, you will have to take x-rays to check that tooth. Sometime teeth are internally damaged after an accident. They might have difficulty moving with braces. Basically everything around them will move, but they will not move. It does not happen in every accident case, but it does happen sometimes. Your orthodontist will do a full series of x-rays and photos and will check for all of those possibilities. Good luck and keep us posted!
