I got a water colour tattoo recently on my upper arm that was much bigger and more colourful than expected and was wondering what the chances were of complete removal using laser treatments.

The best way to get an accurate assessment of your prospective tattoo removal is to have a licensed medical aesthetician preform a consultation. Water color tattoo involves diluting the ink and not applying a heavy outline, this can make it easier for the tattoo to be removed. Some colors can be more stubborn than others to remove and it does depend of the equipment being used.

Thank you for your question.  I like to use the Picosure laser which can remove 95%+ of a tattoo. It works best to remove dark colors such as black, blue, purple and green. It can take up to 6-10 sessions to remove a tattoo and the average cost per session to remove a large tattoo is $500-$1000. Some colours are harder to remove than others, but it is likely you can remove the whole tattoo. I would suggest making a consultation to get an accurate assessment on how many sessions you would need to remove it.

Once your fresh tattoo has healed for two months, you can begin the removal process. Light colors sometimes need to oxidize and get darker first before they can be completely removed. A plus in your favor is that water color tattoos use less intense pigments, so they may fade more easily. Still, count on at least 5 to 8 sessions for removal. A board-certified dermatologist will be able to give you a more accurate timeline in person.
