Why is it advised that you stop all retinoids before Fraxel?

I used a retinol cream at night and did not stop it before Fraxel dual around my eyes- I was not told to. Now I feel I have developed sunken eyes and a big divot under my periorbital skin. Could not stopping the retinoids contributed to this?

Retinoids can leave the skin vulnerable to excess irritation after a Fraxel treatment, which is why doctors usually recommend you stop using the products before your appointment. The effects you are describing are not likely to be associated with retinoid use. However, I would schedule a follow-up with your doctor for an in-person assessment to ensure your recovery process is progressing as it should.

It is advised that you stop all retinoids before Fraxel as well as sun tanning, self-tanning,  Accutane, hydroquinone, bleaching creams, Retin-A, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents or chemical peels for 2 weeks before Fraxel treatment, to make the skin less sensitive to the procedure and to get optimal results. Always consult with a board certified medical practitioner for your treatment.
