EVLT treatment on bulging hand and wrist veins.

Question

I am wanting to get EVLT treatment done on my buldging hand and wrist veins. I have had it done on my legs with no issues. But my vascular doctor wont touch hand veins. Ive also had ultrasound studies aof my arm and hand veins and other they are fine. Problem is Im having trouble finding a doctor that works on hands. Other then Scelothoropy. Im in Augusta, Ga now but will he moving to Colorado Springs in March. I prefer a doctor not too far away. Thanks.

Two options for treating hand veins that you find unsightly include The injection of foam (sclerotherapy) or performing a phlebectomy. Not all vein doctors work on the hands however these two treatments are both very effective for resolving unsightly hand veins.

I would recommend against treatment of hand veins. Hand veins often look more prominent as we age because we lose some fat under the skin that makes them less obvious when younger but the veins themselves are not abnormal and it is best to leave them alone.  While there are physicians whom will treat this with sclerotherapy, there are many of us, including myself that believe it is better to preserve these veins.  These veins are often used for IV access, and while you can use other veins for IV access, in an emergency, quick access is valuable. Consider getting a filler or fat transfer to the back of the hands which would not only give you the results you want but also help preserve those veins.

The veins in your hands are normal. Only in the rare cases of obstruction in the drainage of these veins like problems in the subclavian vein (SVC syndrome) they dilate but in reality they are still "normal veins". What you might be noticing is that the veins are more noticeable than when you were younger. This is a common finding mostly in older people that are not overweight. A simple solution with very good cosmetic results is fat transfer to the dorsum of the hand that will " hide " the veins and also because of stem cells in the fat it might improve the quality of the skin. Alternatively the use of fillers is a good option. Getting rid of the veins by any means is just not a good idea. Hope this helps.

Your veins on hands and wrists are too superficial and EVLT present the risk of burning your skin. They are also tortuous most of the time and it would be difficult to insert a laser fiber. 
Sclerotherapy or phlebectomy are the best ways to treat those veins. Try to find a vascular surgeon or a phlebologist that treat veins frequently.

Whoever you end up going to, make sure they do these treatments frequently. We offer patients a combination of sclerotherapy, phlebectomy (removing veins through tiny incisions), and laser. You want to make sure you get the right thing for you, in particular, not a one size fits all approach.

EVLT is not indicated for the treatment of hand veins. Sclerotherapy (inections of polidocanol or other sclerosant with or without foam) is the usual treatment of choice and is associated with a high rate of success.

You may want to look into getting a long acting filler agent to help reduce the "bulging" look of your hand vein.  Its a nice aesthetic option and doesn't put you in a potential problem of losing your hand veins forever with sclerotherapy or the off label use of EVLT on hand veins.

Evlt is not meant for use in the small veins of the hands or forearms.  Foam sclerotherapy is definitely an option but be prepared for the veins to look worse before they look better.

We  do not perform EVLT on arm or hand veins only leg veins.  Usually for hand or arm veins, I use foam sclerotherapy to close these.  We make a shaving cream like foam out of a sclerosing solution and this closes the vein better.  The foam pushes the blood out of the vein and irritates the vein lining so that the vein closes better and gets rid of the varicose veins
