How much cartilage is removed for septoplasty?

When performing septoplasty or harvesting the area for grafting material how much cartilage is generally removed? If you take too much would that mean the danger of a perforation or collapse could increase?

In our practice, we rarely remove any cartilage at all for a septoplasty since the majority of the obstruction is bone. We always leave enough structural integrity along the dorsum and caudal septum to make sure that there is good support. When performing cartilage grafting techniques, only the amount required for the graft is removed. Multiple grafts of cartilage and can be used from just septal cartilage, while still leaving structural support.
