Can/should I put sunscreen on my incision site if I'm going to be exposed to the sun? I am almost 4 weeks post-op.

Question

I no longer have stitches but my incision sight is still pretty promenade/visible. There isn't any open sores but but the scar is hasn't started fading yet. I'm going to the lake but going to try my best to stay in the shade at all times and going to be wearing a hat but just in case I was wondering if I should put sunscreen on the incision sight to prevent scarring? And if so, what type of sunscreen? Thanks!

It is a great idea to protect any incision from the sun to avoid pigmentation. Choose a hat that provides  sun protection and a sun screen with good UVA and UVB protection. The sun screens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are always very efficient. Best! Dr Miotto

Absolutely wear sunscreen at all times over the recent surgical site. For 12-14months to area is susceptible to staining from the sun. Wear spf at least 35 to prevent this. I tell my patients to wear sunscreen daily to prevent issues. I prefer a sunscreen with titanium or zinc. Also wear a hat at the lake and have fun!

It is always a good idea to protect new incisions as they are sensitive to the sun.  I usually recommend sunblock of full coverage.
