Sometimes all trays are given to the patient at the same time, but usually the patient should expect to get several trays at one time, and return to the doctor for more when those run out.
You will likely not get all the trays for your Invisalign treatment at once, unless you have less than 4-5 total aligners. Your Doctor will decide how many aligners you are given at once, and for how long you will wear each one. This is based on the prescription given to Align to make your trays by your doctor. It will not always necessarily be the same number of aligners given out either each time.
That is at the discretion of the doctor. Either way works though he/she may not wnat to give out all the trays when a payment plan is in effect.
Invisalign aligners are given out at the discretion of the treating doctor. It works like this: Align technology is a very sophisticated orthodontic laboratory who creates the aligners from the direction of the treating doctor. Align has gained huge experience over the years and can give advice to the treating doctor, but the doctor ultimately has the responsibility to decide on the treatment. This effects the number and type of aligners and will effect when they are given out as well. Where and when attachments are placed, where and when interproximal reductions are completed, and if and when elastics need to be worn, are all decisions that need to be made by the treating doctor and will effect when aligners are given out. Align Technology will manufacture all the aligners at the start of treatment, but the treating doctor needs to decide how many and when the aligners are given to the patient. I hope this helps to answer your question.
Depending on the movements prescribed in each sequential aligner, your orthodontist will give you a certain number of aligners to change on your own.

I would not put too much thought and get bogged down by the number of trays. It does vary. Also, sometimes your doctor may request the movements to take place over a longer/shorter number of aligners. All depends on what she/he is trying to accomplish. What you can...
