Alarplasty Scars. What Can I Do About Them?

Indented alar scars may require excision and layered closure.  I frequently see alar scars that are thick, necessitating pulsed dye scar laser. 

Alar base surgery can result in asymmetries or poor scars if they're not performed perfectly. It's a very unforgiving area to operate. The scar should improve with time. Typically, scars that are not impairing function (not blocking breathing) are revised somewhere between 6-12 months. Depending upon the scar and how severe the issue, it might be possible to revise sooner. However, it's ideal for that area to heal completely before performing revision surgery. If you have a good relationship with your plastic surgeon, I would pose this question to him or her. If you've lost trust in them, seek a Facial Plastic Surgeon highly experienced in rhinoplasty and alar base surgery for a second opinion. I hope this information is helpful.Stephen Weber MD, FACS
