The most common cause of hair loss in your age group is Androgenic Alopecia -hair loss due to genetics and hormones.Other less common causes are thyroid disease,autoimmune disorders,protein malnutrition ,severe anemia and/or medications.The nickel size area you describe may be due to Alopecia Areata (autoimmune). I would recommend having a consultation with a Dermatologist or experienced Hair Restoration surgeon.

There are many causes of hair loss including male pattern baldness.  The best course of action at this point would be for you to be evaluated by a physician who treats hair loss exclusively.  It would be important for them to do a complete history and physical examination of your scalp.  If this was felt to be male pattern baldness then there are several treatments that could be offered to prevent further hair loss and in some cases grow new hair.  At this point you are too young to have a hair restoration procedure and prevention of further loss would be of the utmost importance.  Some of the options that may be offered are using topical minoxidil (Rogaine), oral finasteride (Propecia), Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments.  But again, seeing an expert in the field would be your best course of action.
