Severe Acne in Isotretinoin - Isotretinoin, commonly known by the brand name Accutane, is a powerful medication used to treat severe acne, particularly recalcitrant nodular or cystic acne, which has not responded to other treatments like antibiotics.Treatment Process:A course of isotretinoin treatment lasts typically 16 to 20 weeks. During this time, patients take one or two pills a day with meals. The dosage is determined based on the patient's body weight and the severity of the acne.Mechanism of Action:Isotretinoin works by decreasing the size and output of sebaceous glands, which produce oil, in the skin. It also helps to promote the rapid turnover of skin cells. This combination reduces the amount of acne-causing bacteria present in the skin and prevents the clogging of pores.Side Effects:Isotretinoin is highly effective, but it also has potential side effects. The most common include dry skin, itching, rash, dry eyes, and nosebleeds. More serious side effects can include changes in vision, severe stomach pain, and mental health issues. Regular monitoring is required to manage these side effects.Pregnancy Warning:Isotretinoin is known to cause serious birth defects, so it's not recommended for use during pregnancy. Women of childbearing age who take isotretinoin are required to use two forms of birth control before, during, and after treatment to prevent pregnancy.Monitoring:Patients on isotretinoin require regular follow-up appointments to monitor their response to the medication and manage any side effects.
