Is the cost of ThermiVa worth it?

ThermiVa has a 94% Worth It Rating from reviewers on RealSelf, so a solid majority were happy with their investment.

Many reviewers who say it’s “Worth It” rave about the improvement in vaginal tightening, increased lubrication, a reduction in urinary stress incontinence, better sexual satisfaction, and more self-confidence after this nonsurgical procedure.

The key to success with ThermiVa is patient selection: the treatment is only recommended for women with mild to moderate symptoms (like the laxity, stress urinary incontinence, atrophy, and vaginal dryness that often develops during menopause).

More severe vaginal laxity and stress incontinence often requires a surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedure, such as vagionplasty.

It's imperative to consult with a board-certified physician who can evaluate your symptoms and conduct a physical exam, to be sure you're a good candidate for ThermiVa. "I believe in getting to the root cause of a problem before initiating therapy," says Dr. Rosalind Jackson, an OB-GYN in Miamisburg, Ohio.

"Women have come to our office after having ThermiVa or a similar procedure elsewhere and still have the same problems they sought help for. Unfortunately, they were improperly evaluated and lost all their money," says Dr. Troy Robbin Hailparn, an OB-GYN in San Antonio.

Also keep in mind that nonsurgical treatments like ThermiVa offer only temporary results (lasting about a year) and require multiple visits. If you plan to keep the benefits long-term, you can expect to spend $500–$1,500 for annual or twice-yearly maintenance treatments.

"Over 10 years, the cost is three times what surgery be, and you end up exactly where you were at the beginning, but with a substantially lighter wallet," says Dr. Michael Goodman, an OB-GYN in Davis, California.

Surgery can't treat vaginal dryness, but if laxity or stress incontinence are your primary concerns, it's worth considering whether a vaginoplasty may be more cost-effective in the long run.

Why do ThermiVa costs vary?

These are the biggest factors that influence the cost of ThermiVa vaginal rejuvenation procedures.

1) Your provider's credentials and level of experience

ThermiVa can be performed by physicians, physicians' assistants, or nurse practitioners. Providers are given clinical training when they purchase the ThermiVa device, which has a slim wand that’s passed over the external labial skin and vulva before it’s gently inserted, to treat the tissue of the vaginal walls.

Many doctors on RealSelf note that they personally perform all ThermiVa procedures, to ensure the best care for their patients. You'll likely be charged a premium for treatment that's performed by a doctor, but that price may be worth paying. The more experience a provider has with ThermiVa, the more likely they are to be aware of the nuances in how the treatment can be performed, to provide maximum benefit.

Different providers have different protocols. During your initial consultation, ask your doctor how they maximize the results of patients with concerns like yours.

For instance, while the manufacturer recommends 12–20 minutes for both the internal and external tissue, "we typically treat a patient for the full 20 minutes internally and externally to achieve maximum benefit at the target temperature," says Dr. George Shashoua, a urogynecologist in Austin, Texas.

ThermiVa is considered a very safe procedure that doesn’t usually carry serious side effects because the wand has a built-in thermometer, to ensure the skin is heated to the correct temperature and doesn't burn. However, the treatment still carries risks of burning, pain, and post-treatment infection. Treatment by an experienced, board-certified physician can help reduce your risk.

2) Their practice location.

All cosmetic procedures usually cost more in major metro areas, which have a higher cost of living.

This is especially true if your provider has a luxurious medspa in an upscale part of town, rather than a more modest office in a less exclusive neighborhood.

3) How many treatment sessions you have.

The makers of ThermiVa recommend a treatment plan of three monthly sessions, for best results. That's how many sessions it takes to increase blood flow and ramp up new collagen production, to temporarily tighten the vaginal tissues, "shrink" the labia majora, reduce stress urinary incontinence, and increase moisture and sensation.

Most providers offer three-treatment packages. While it's possible to notice some tightening from collagen remodeling after just one session, optimal benefits usually aren't seen or felt until about three months after the last treatment in a series. So paying for just one session might not be worth it.

4) Whether you combine ThermiVa with other treatments.

ThermiVa can be used in conjunction with the O-Shot, which uses PRP injections (platelet-rich plasma) to enhance the female orgasms.

This radiofrequency energy treatment can also be done as an add-on to other surgical procedures, such as vaginoplasty or labiaplasty.

Combining procedures will increase your overall bill, but some providers discount each additional procedure.

Is ThermiVa covered by insurance?

ThermiVa is an elective procedure and not considered medically necessary, so insurance doesn’t cover it.

"I tell patients that if this is something you desire and it disrupts your intimate wellness, then it's worth it for you to take charge of what you want and need," says Dr. Jackson. "Don't let the insurance game affect your quality of life."

If cost is an issue, speak to your provider about payment plans or financing options that fit with your budget.
