I am 27 and 250lbs. I have decided to do the gastric sleeve after loosing and gaining weight repeatedly in the past eight years. I had a baby about a year ago and my weight just keeps going up. I'm tired all the time, I have little time for the gym along with little motivation. Hopefully my surgery will help with finding my way back to myself. Updated on 24 Mar 2020: I feel the difference in my body. I feel smaller. I can see the weight loss I'm about twenty lbs or twenty lbs down. My clothes fit so loose. The eating change takes some getting used too. I vomit a couple of times from eating too fast or eating meat cooked in grease.
Dr Buchins program requires you to change your lifestyle. Ive had a very positive experience and have lost 160 lbs since my surgery. I am no longer diabetic and have stopped taking blood thinners. Dr Buchin saved my life. I interviewed 4 surgeons before having this procedure and his program is the best.
Entrusting Dr. Buchin with my life-changing surgery will forever be the best decision I've ever made. I continue to receive impeccable support, care and treatment, even 18 months post-surgery. I can't thank them enough.

I have struggled with my weight for most of my life. I have had periods where it was more under control but after having children, I spent 10+ years feeling miserable and hating myself. I had a lap band placed in 2011 and hated every minute of it. I didn't lose the weight and wound up feeling even worse about myself. I felt like a complete failure. It wasn't until I saw a friend I hadn't seen in a very long time that my eyes were opened to VSG. She looked FABULOUS and she motivated me to meet with her surgeon, Dr. Buchin. I made an appt. and within the first 2 minutes of meeting him, I knew I was in the right place and that a revision from band to sleeve was what I needed to do. He is passionate about what he does and it shows. Dr. Buchin spent time with me, he makes himself very accessible to questions and concern at all times and put me at ease when I was scared at my pre-op. Scared of electing to go under anesthesia, scared of complications, but mostly, scared of failure. This journey has been nothing but amazing. I have lost about 100 lbs. so far and feel fantastic. Just 15 more lbs. to goal! I'm forever grateful that I was put in Dr. Buchin's care. This tool he has given me is a gem and I will be sure to take care of it for the rest of my life.
Dr. Buchin was awesome spends a lot of time talking to me about surgery what to expect pre and post op. He answers questions thoroughly and precisely. I was very happy that my aunt recommended him and the sleeve. I struggled with obesity my whole life, but with this procedure and following the packet for what foods to eat, I am not struggling lately. I went through an amazing transformation thanks to my aunt and dr buchin. Updated on 18 Mar 2015: I basically went from 233 now being 180. That was amazing. I eat small portions and learn to eat slowly with all types of food. The surgery took only an hour and was forever life changing. I only experience a mild discomfort after, but the same day experienced a lot of pain. I was lucky. I avoid many carbs like bread and chips altogether. This has helped a lot in loosing weight plus I exercise daily, and drink 64 ounces of water. Updated on 11 Aug 2015: Hi everyone I'm now around 151. Doing well with my weight journey weight is coming off slowly but still shedding pounds only about 21 pounds from 130. I still exercise almost everyday. I have chicken or fish for lunch or dinner breakfast is scrambled eggs with cheese. I can start having oatmeal once a week with protein powder and exercise an extra hour. I have a picture below of the new me. I started at 223 or 230 at borderline diabetes and asthma. A lot of the asthma is gone but some allergies still to mites and seasonal allergies. No more being out of breath as much it's a miracle. Had my surgery on jan. 7th. Now we are at August 11th.
An amazing experience made easy because of the right surgeon. Deciding to have bariatric surgery is a very difficult and scary decision one has to make. And then you need to decide which type of bariatric surgery to have. My decision was made easy because I had the right consultation from the right surgeon. After discussing all available options we decided that a sleeve gastrectomy was the right surgery for my needs.
I am a 62 yr old male and had my surgery when I was 57. My maximum weight was 295. I am 5'11". So my BMI was around 40. I had sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout and was borderline diabetic. Also suffered from chronic back pain and excess alcohol consumption. I had worked to hard all my life to accept the likelihood of a shortened life span due to obesity. Today I weigh 165 I am off of all medications except for vitamin supplements. I have much more energy and a healthy relationship with food and diet. I have had no complications except for removal of my gall bladder about s year after my bypass. I have also been alcohol free for the last 35 months. None of this would have been possible without my Bariatric surgery
No choice for Gastric Sleeve but that is the procedure I had. Dr. Buchin is a very skilled surgeon and his pre-op workup, preop class, support group and nutritionist in his office really prepared me for my surgery. I had no complications whatsoever and have already lost 125 pounds. Also his office staff couldn't be nicer and more helpful.
Weight Loss Surgery will improve almost every comorbidity, however unfortunately it does not improve hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is only improved by Synthroid. We will check for hypothyroidism prior to surgery because that can be a cause of obesity and low metabolism. Maintaining the correct amount of thyroid hormone in the body is very important to success with weight loss surgery
Due to the fact that we perform the majority of gastric bypass laparoscopically wound healing is usually not a big concern. There are usually six very small incisions which heal very well. You and your surgeon will limit the reasons why someone would heal poorly, such as quitting smoking which is extremely important. Tight glucose control for diabetics is also very important for wound healing. Keeping sugars within the normal range is very important.
Your dietitian is correct. Carbonated beverages are off-limits due to the fact that they will expand the pouch. Also eating and drinking at the same time is also not recommended due to the fact that you will be able to eat more food if you wash it down with water or other liquids. The most important thing to eat is protein. 75% of your meal should be a protein, the other 25% of your meal should be a fruit or a vegetable. Starches such as pasta rice or bread should be limited.
One of the greatest changes in gastric bypass surgery is that it is much safer than it was 10 years ago. The death rate 10 years ago was approximately 1 in 200, however now the death rate is approximately 1 in 1000. The complication rates has also significantly improved. This is attributed to the fact that most gastric bypass surgery is performed laparoscopically today. Also the laparoscopic techniques that we use are much improved. The instruments that we use today are also much improved.
If you had a tubal ligation in the past then you will be unable to get pregnant after a gastric bypass. Gastric bypass surgery does improve infertility due to hormonal changes in the body. You have to wait at least one year after bariatric surgery to get pregnant because you cannot support a fetus with massive weight loss. If you would like to get pregnant again you have to go to a gynecologist to reverse the tubal ligation.
