Tummy Tuck - Why It Works!

by

An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a very commonly performed procedure for abdomen and torso contouring. This is a great procedure, for the right patients that produces dramatic contour changes through the waistline and torso. It is designed to address abdominal wall laxity and redundant abdominal skin and tissue. In my practice I address the entire torso, not just the front portion of a patient. I routinely perform liposuction of the lower back and flank, the so-called “love handle” area. This liposuction defines the waistline and restores the hour-glass shape that is ideal for females.

Why it Works - the typical patient that presents for a tummy tuck has loose or redundant abdominal skin and tissue and a roundness of the abdomen they’d like to restore. Most patients have had children and suffer from abdominal wall laxity as a result. Some weight gain during pregnancy with stretched redundant skin or extensive stretch marks is also common complaints. A tummy tuck works because at the level of the muscle fascia (which was stretched with pregnancy) sutures are used to tighten and flatten the abdominal wall. Then the skin and subcutaneous fat from the belly button to the pubic area is completely excised. This removes a great deal of stretch marks and then the upper skin and tissue is stretched tight and flat down to the lower incision. With liposuction contouring of the flanks, and flattening and tightening of the abdomen, a shapely feminine shape is restored!

Who it Works For - Not everyone is a candidate for a tummy tuck. The ideal patient has some abdominal wall laxity that can be repaired and enough skin and soft tissue redundancy. There has to be enough loose skin to stretch from above the belly button to the low pubic area. If there isn’t enough skin to stretch then a tummy tuck can’t be performed and those patients are more ideal for abdominal liposuction to improve their contours.
