Recovering from a rhinoplasty FAQ

How long do you recommend I take off from work, school, etc. to heal properly?
We recommend at least 1 week of physical rest after the surgery. This will allow adequate time for your body to focus on healing immediately after the procedure without any demands. Ideally, another week would help to slowly ease the body to return to normal activities and allow for possible social downtime such as bruising and swelling.
What medications will I be given; which pain medications do you normally prescribe?
We generally prescribe 1) antibiotics (to prevent infection), 2) pain medication to minimize discomfort, 3) antinausea medication
Every person has a unique medical hx and we take all of this into account prior to dispensing medication. The antibiotics help to prevent an infection from developing and are taken after the surgery. Majority of our patients have mild to moderate discomfort that is manageable through oral pain medications. Some patients may experience nausea throughout the recovery process and medications will help to minimize this.
What tips do you have for me to ease some discomfort and pain?
Adequate rest is the number one most important part of the healing process. Pain is highly individualized and we all have a different perception of pain in conjunction with difference in procedure requirements. Is it extremely rare that we have patients who are in significant pain and will always address this ensure that they are comfortable.
Must I follow any special diet, both preoperatively and postoperatively?
We encourage our patients to have a well balanced diet. Nutrition is a key component to facilitate wound healing and is a non-negotiable. Adequate amounts of vitamins, minerals, protein and essential fatty acids are the building blocks for our body. The healthier the patient the faster the recovery. We also recommend a low sodium diet 1 week before and during recovery which can help to minimize the amount of fluid retained which can enhance swelling.
How long after the surgery will I be able to exercise, run, or participate in contact sports?
Physical activity may be resumed 3 weeks after surgery. This is to allow ample time for your body to recover while minimizing the amount of bruising, swelling or possible bleeding. We will follow you closely after your procedure to assess your recovery and notify you when you can resume exercise once again.
