Kybella the Newest Option for Neck Contouring

Many adults suffer from fatty collections in their anterior neck and chin region, a natural consequence of aging and weight gain. This is commonly referred to as a “double-chin” deformity. The FDA in April 2015 approved the release of Kybella (deoxycholic acid, distributed by Allergan) for treatment of submental fatty deposits. Kybella is an injectable substance that naturally occurs in our bodies, that dissolves fat and helps in the absorption of fat.

Patients with localized fat deposits under the chin, and good skin tone are candidates for treatment with Kybella. Treatments take only a few minutes, with noticeable results occurring approximately 3-4 weeks after treatment. Most patients will require two to three treatments spaced six weeks apart, to obtain optimal correction.

The fat dissolved with Kybella is permanent, and does not return with weight gain. When injected into submental fat, Kybella destroys fat cells. Side effects are very similar to other injectables, such as Botox and fillers.Swelling and bruising at the injection site can occur, as well as itching, numbness, and mild discomfort, which resolve in several days.

Other treatment options for submental fatty deposits are liposuction and surgical correction with a facelift or neck lift.
