What should I expect with my Tummy Tuck scar?

A Tummy Tuck “Abdominoplasty” can leave minimally visible scarring if placed low and hidden in the natural body folds. You should take your time and browse through the surgeon’s before and after photos. Often the Tummy Tuck scars are shown directly without lingerie. If not, always look to see what kind or type of panties are worn in the post-operative photos. If the after photos show a small, low-cut bikini or a revealing French cut panty with no visible scars, you know that the Tummy Tuck incision was placed low and out of sight. On the other hand if the post-operative photos show a pair of granny panties or other types high-waisted underwear, this typically indicates an attempt to conceal a much higher scar placement. Remember to bring a favorite pair of your bikini bottoms or lingerie panties with you to your consultation. Have the surgeon mark where your incision lines will be located. This will give you a better appreciation of what you can wear post-operatively.

Pay close attention to the quality of the incision line. There are ways to close a Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty to limit scarring. Placing deep fascial supporting sutures and putting less tension on the superficial skin layer will make scarring less noticeable. Other factors that can play a role in scarring are the overall skin condition, it’s thickness, elasticity, and the presence of stretch marks. Remember Tummy Tuck scars will usually appear more pronounced in darker skinned individuals.
