Dr. Bengtson and Breast Augmentation

Interest in breast augmentation grows among younger women across the country, including women in Grand Rapids

Today’s young women are better educated, better paid, and have more access to information than their predecessors ever could have dreamed. The question of how they choose to utilize these resources yields some interesting answers, among them “breast augmentation.” The beauty of this new era of choice is that younger women considering a breast augmentation have increased access to information about skilled and knowledgeable surgeons, such as Dr. Brad Bengtson of the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery in Grand Rapids.

The American Society for Plastic Surgery says that 34 is the average age of women who choose to experience breast augmentation, but the procedure is now being hailed as one way women in their 20s can take charge of their image, modifying or enhancing the features that cause self-doubt.
Twenty-four-year-old rapper Iggy Azalea was recently featured in Vogue’s April issue discussing her decision to undergo a breast augmentation. It might seem unlikely that a woman as successful, talented, and beautiful as Azalea would be uncomfortable about her body, but Azalea insisted that she’d considered a breast augmentation procedure her entire life, and despite the fact that she initially intended to keep the procedure a secret, she ultimately realized she wasn’t embarrassed. Rather than hide her new figure, Azalea went shopping with a Vogue reporter to purchase new clothes that would celebrate her body.

The subject of whether to openly discuss a cosmetic procedure like breast augmentation is an incredibly personal decision, and one that women across the country, including Grand Rapids, must decide for themselves. While some women might consider this information rather private, others, like Azalea, are eager to discuss their decision with a broad audience.
When questioned about her openness sharing the procedure Azalea told another news outlet, “Everybody did say ‘I don’t think you need to say it because no one will ever know because they’re so small.’ I said, ‘I know but I’m just going to say it [because] I’m a blabber mouth! … I’d feel better not to have some secret. It’s much freer to say it … .”

While no information has yet been made available about the type of breast augmentation Azalea chose, Angeleno Magazinein Los Angeles recently published a series called #MustDo featuring advice for important milestones and tips to better enable readers take control of their lives and bodies. For readers in their 20s, Angeleno Magazine cited breast augmentation as “The Must-Do.” Specifically, a plastic surgeon consulted for the article insisted that Gummy Bear Implants were the best option because “this implant is designed to create the most natural look while achieving a significant enhancement in size.”

However, Dr. Bengtson—who was integrally involved in the study of Natrelle™ “Gummy Bear” breast implants—cautions that while this implant is perfect for the ideal candidates, it is not an option for every patient. Dr. Bengtson of Grand Rapids had the largest Natrelle™ “Gummy Bear” breast implant augmentation patient group in the United States, and was responsible for creating the curriculum that new plastic surgeons need to complete before they can safely utilize this implant.

Because the Natrelle™ “Gummy Bear” breast implants were only recently made available to the public—the FDA approved the implant in February of 2013—it’s essential for women interested in this particular cohesive gel breast implant for breast augmentation to identify a board certified plastic surgeon with sufficient experience and skill to deliver the best possible results.
