I met with Dr. Mehta to get a second opinion on...

I met with Dr. Mehta to get a second opinion on some invasive surgery recommended by an Eye, Ear & Nose doctor to cure sleep apnea. The invasive surgery included surgery to reduce the thickness of my tongue (very painful two week out of work recovery), cutting open my jaw through my chin to pull my jaw forward to provide a larger passage for airflow, and using RF energy (microwaves) to shrink the turbinates in my nasal passage (a procedure this same doctor had already performed on me several years prior).
After discussing his recommendations with my primary care physician, we both agreed that I should consider having nose surgery as I couldn't breathe through my nose., and then try a CPAP device before undergoing such radical surgery.
Dr. Mehta had previously performed nose surgery on my two daughters, one of which had a broken nose from a soccer accident, and the other had a deviated septum, and our family was very pleased with the results, both functionally and cosmetically. I had previously had two rhinoplasty surgeries 35 years ago to straighten a broken nose and septum. While the nose was straightened, it didn't have enough structural support such that my nostrils collapsed every time I breathed in which meant I could no longer breathe through my nose. I also had several large holes between my two nostrils. Based on this, I was a little gun shy about having a third rhinoplasty operation.
Dr. Mehta completely rebuilt my nose, harvesting cartilage from my ribs to provide structure for my nasal walls, and he harvested fascia from my scalp to line the passage to repair the holes between my two nostrils. Dr. Mehta took the time (6 hours) to do the surgery correctly. The anesthesiologist commented that he rarely got to work with Dr. Mehta, but considered him the best plastic surgery in the area because he was so careful and meticulous and that he would personally select Dr. Mehta if he every needed plastic surgery on himself or a family member.
The surgery was successful beyond my highest expectations. I can now breathe through my nose, which allowed me to use a CPAP device with a nasal pillow rather than a full face mask. I was breathing so well that I had a followup sleep study and I was delighted that the nose surgery cured my sleep apnea and I was able to return the CPAP device. I now seldom snore, and when I do (usually because of too much wine), it is not as loud. This outcome is much better than either the tongue reduction and jaw surgeries, or using a CPAP device each night for the rest of my life.
Dr. Mehta has very good interpersonal skills and I always feel that he is genuinely interested in his patients and doing the best work possible. His follow-on visits are included in the price of the procedure.
