I had 5 surgeries on my left eye from a detached retina. I have a scleral buckle around my eye for the rest of my life. I am left with a bag of fat under the eye. However it is not on my right eye. Needless to say I look very bad with just one large bag under one eye only. Medicare will not cover it because it is cosmetic. It would be cosmetic if I asked for both eyes wouldnt it? The bag is obviously caused from trauma to the eye because my other eye is fine. What can I do?

I recommend that my patients avoid smoking anything for 3 weeks after surgery- the smoke can impair oxygen delivery to your tissues which you will want to optimize to achieve the best scarring.
Preoperative pictures and an exam will be necessary to sort this out. The ptosis may have not been recognized preoperatively. Kenneth Hughes, MD Los Angeles, CA
