Will Smoking Affect Juvederm in the Lips?

There is no reason to avoid Juvederm Facial injections because you smoke. There is no study that I am aware of that was done utilizing the scientific method, and analyzing the longevity of filler products in smokers vs. non-smokers. There might be a theoretical increased metabolic rate in smokers that might increase the rate in which the filler dissolves, thereby shortening the duration of the effect. I have never seen this in print, nor noticed it in my patients, but I wonder if it occurs. Smoking does involve more contraction of your lip muscles than if you didn't smoke, and this might increase the local activity or metabolic demands and make the product go away faster. This is all theoretical. It does not appear to be a clinical problem for smokers to have fillers injected... but please try to quit for good, anyway!

I’m not aware of any evidence that smoking will effect any fillers in your lips. However there is plenty of evidence which suggests that smoking does prematurely age you. You’ll be surprised how much better your skin will look even 6 weeks after you stop smoking!

You're right, you are already screwed, stopping one day before injections won't have any effect.
You are, no doubt, a big girl and have made the choice to smoke. The best thing that you can do for yourself (and reap from this question on Real Self) is to commit to quit smoking forever. In the long term you will be helping not only your skin and wrinkles, but how about those lungs of yours?
On the positive side of things, smoking should not effect your upcoming Juvederm injections with you NP. Nor will drinking bottled water, or any of the other "old wife's" tales about those "smoker's lines". Your mitochondria will appreciate the extra oxygen they will be able to work with to help your skin once you quit smoking for good.

Smoking generally effects wound healing and cessation for one month preoperatively is typically advised. In terms of bruising and bleeding, I am not aware of an association. In regards to long term effects, there is no doubt as to its adverse effects on skin health, elasticity as well as the development of perioral radial rhytids (lipstick lines) secondary to repeated contraction and pursing of the lips. It's a great idea for you to stop altogether.

Hello and thankyou for your question .Bruising and swelling occur at varied degrees of severity regardless of smoking status. So relax in the short term but in the long term it does seem to effect the longevity of the filler ( granted this is anecdotal evidence ie general impression rather than statistics from research as to my knowledge this has not been studied in great detail ). 
Further to possibly making it last less , smoking definately has a negative effect on skin so your filler will look better if your skin is not accumulating oxidative stress from smoking.Its a very good time to reassess your status on the smoking front for long term goals .Good luck !

Thank you or your question. Smoking is not a contraindication nor will it affect how Juvederm will look in your lips. All mouth movement will eventually absorb the hyaluronic acid based filler. However, whether if you smoke or not you will need another treatment after 6-12 months. Smoking before receiving Juvederm for lip augmentation has not been shown to increase the risk of bruising or bleeding after receiving the injections. Smoking also should have no effect on a dermal filler's longevity. However, you should try to quit smoking for health reasons. Please consult a board-certified dermatologist about lip augmentation.
