Juvederm will last about 9 months in the cheeks and 6 months around the mouth

George J. Beraka, MD answers: How long does Juvederm last?

I've been researching how long Juvederm lasts, but what people say in Juvederm reviews and what the FDA says don't really match up.  Can someone tell me, how long does Juvederm last? Does where you have the Juvederm injections in your face make a difference in how long it lasts?

I think Juvederm really is quite long lasting,  but I like patients to have only pleasant surprises.  So these are the estimates that I give.  The manufacturer (with FDA backing) claims longer.

I think this is a good duration.  Remember, your face changes over time, and you don't want a permanent filler (which might be in the wrong place in a couple of years).

A: We don't know exactly how long Juvederm lasts

Juvederm products have only been approved by the FDA for filling of facial wrinkles for the last two years with an indication for up to one year duration.  So, the experience compared to Restylane in this country is relatively short.

In my practice, I have noticed slightly longer duration with Juvederm, but there is no well designed study comparing the products.  The duration of effect is dependent on many factors, such as, area of injection, which is controllable in a study, and patient response to the actual molecule, not controllable.

We can therefore only speak in generalities with ranges of duration.  The ranges for Juvederm are 6-12 months in the nasolabial folds, 3-6 months in the lips, and 9+ months in the tear trough area in my experience.

A: Juvederm lasts longer than Restylane in most areas

I have had many years of experience with all of the different fillers. When comparing Juvederm and Restylane - Juvederm lasts much longer in most parts of the face. In the lips, neither lasts very long.

Keep in mind that results vary from patient to patient, but usually I see:

Juvederm - 6-10 months

Restylane - 5-7 months

Both last 3-5 months in the lips

Juvederm is a filler made of hyaluronic acid which is found in our bodies normally. It provides excellent correction of nasolabial folds (the fold that separates the mouth area from the cheek area) as well as finer lines and wrinkles. Juvederm is also used to plump the lips and give more definition to the lip edge.

Dr. Brown (answer above) has given a very good explanation of the science behind Juvederm. It is my experience that Juvederm lasts for about 6 months. Of course this will be slightly different from person to person and depend on where the Juvederm is placed.
