You'll Be Fine

Christopher L. Hess, MD answers: Mommy makeover recovery

What is recovery like with a mommy makeover? I have scheduled both a breast augmentation with lift and a tummy tuck and am pretty scared. I am worried that the pain will be unbearable.

I know medication will be provided but I do not want to be comatose. I have 2 small children and a wonderful husband that will be taking 100% care of all 3 of us but I also want to be coherent. Will I be alert and will I be in so much pain as to scare my children? I have had 2 c sections and the pain was completely bearable.

First let's discuss the augmentation. Nowadays the implants are placed under the muscle. This means that the lower, medial or the part of the muscle closest to the sternum has to be divided. This is where most of the pain will come from. Second the muscle will spasm due to the implants. I give my patients Valium and Percocet and/or Vicodin and every patient has told me they were off the meds in 2-3 days. Most women say a breast augmentation feels like they had a really hard workout at the gym.

The tummy tuck will be the most tender area due to the tightening of the muscle. Without muscle tightening it's minor surgery. Again a little Valium and Percocet and you'll be fine. I recommend my patients stay over night in the hospital for comfort the first night.

Any woman that has had two C-sections will be able to bear the pain. You'll be fine.
