Mommy makeover pain

Steven Wallach, MD answers: Mommy makeover recovery

What is recovery like with a mommy makeover? I have scheduled both a breast augmentation with lift and a tummy tuck and am pretty scared. I am worried that the pain will be unbearable.

I know medication will be provided but I do not want to be comatose. I have 2 small children and a wonderful husband that will be taking 100% care of all 3 of us but I also want to be coherent. Will I be alert and will I be in so much pain as to scare my children? I have had 2 c sections and the pain was completely bearable.

Now that you know what the pain is like from a c-section, I would tell you that from the experience of my patients, a mommy makeover is about the same as the c-section. For the first few days you feel pretty lousy, but by the first week you feel better and move around much easier. By the second week you are almost back to normal in terms of discomfort.

Hi!

Good news! Most women who have had a previous c section tell us that recovery from a tummy tuck is not nearly as bad as recovery from a c section. (We are not going deep inside you.)

And a well performed breast augmentation does not hurt much at all.

Overall, you should be a little sore but functioning well in one week.

I appreciated the comments from the patient who had a "makeover" - there is alot of good SUBJECTIVE experience in it But your experience will be dependent on your interaction with your doctor and his post op regimen.

First off. Recovery from a C section is more painful and protracted because it is an intraabdominal procedure( see my site for previous answers). I use long acting topical anesthetics and NSAIDS which significantly limit the need for opiates which creates a much different recuperation then the patient described. Patients are walking that day, showering in 3 days and driving when they feel safe And are off opiates for 36 hrs.

The first few days will be the worst. Most of the pain will be from the muscle repair part of the tummy tuck. You will feel liek you were hit by a truck for the first few days, but by a week, you willbe sore but it will be bearable. Most of my patients are able to return to work at 2 weeks, as long as no heavy lifting is involved. As many people know, pain is very different between people, so there is no definite rule.

Every patient is different, so it is hard to predict how you, specifically, will recovery.  However, most patients are back to their activities in a week to 10 days.  However, you likely will not be back to full activities for 2 to 3 weeks.  It all really depends on the extent of the surgeries that you require and your healing process.
