Chemical peels for pigmentation

Benjamin Barankin, MD answers: Chemical peel - does it work for hyperpigmentation?

Do chemical peels treat hyperpigmentation? What care should be taken when doing chemical peels for that condition?

Various chemical peels including glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid can be beneficial in reducing hyperpigmentation. Glycolic acid peels are typically applied every 3-4 weeks, for a series of 4-6 peels and with little down time. Trichloroacetic acid is deeper, and may be more effective, but with more discomfort and downtime.  Sun protection after peeling is critical to great results.
