Greensboro Medical Spa Owner Charged With Fraud, Allegedly Injected Non-FDA Approved Silskin
A Greensboro, North Carolina medical spa owner has been charged with 20 counts of felony fraud for using another doctor's name to obtain prescription drugs.
Winston-Salem television station WXII reported that last January, Lauretta Cheek was charged with a misdemeanor after three of her customers reported serious medical conditions (including kidney failure) as a result of cosmetic injections they received at her spa.
The recent felony charges come from Ms. Cheek's unlawful purchase and unlicensed administration of the non-FDA approved dermal filler Silskin, which is made up of highly purified silicone oil. Cheek maintains her innocence and is awaiting a September 3rd court date.
Her spa, Altmed of the Triad, has closed and the building is up for lease. Police reports claim that Cheek administered Silskin shots without doctor supervision and three clients returned to the spa days later with complications.
Paullette Aga of Beneficial Skincare, in the neighboring village of Clemmons, North Carolina, is afraid that medical spa horror stories like this one will hurt the entire industry. She hopes that customers can differentiate day spas from medical spa and she stresses that "the spa goer needs to be forward and inquisitive before anything is put in their body."
