Breast Implant Disaster Appears On Dr. Phil; Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Responds
Real Beauty News on Jul 14, 2008

A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon appeared on Dr. Phil on July 14, 2008 to offer his professional opinion about a patient who has undergone 4 implant repair attempts and 16 surgeries to correct a misshapen breast implant.

The patient originally wanted a simple breast augmentation, but says she was "horrified with the results." She has now had four implants placed and 16 surgeries over the last 3 years to correct what is now a deformed right breast.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon of Beverly Hills responds, “She had such bad luck. There are a few things that can go wrong with elective breast augmentation. In her case, she happened to have them all. First, there was a difference in volume that wasn’t right. Then there was a shifting in the position of implants.

"Then there was an attempt to even the breasts out, and in so doing, lost the crease of her breasts, so that had to be redone,” Dr. Ordon explains. “The single biggest event that caused the problems was infection. In that case, you had to remove the implants. When you remove implants and there’s nothing left in an area that’s been stretched, it shrinks down and shrivels down like the picture that we saw.”

Just to set the record straight...after removing breast implants without replacement the breast does NOT and then me repeat does NOT shrink down and shrivel up as this doctor says it does. That is so far from the truth that it is LAUGHABLE! Many many many many many many (need I go on?) have had their implants taken out (without replacement) and are perfectly happy with their breasts (including me.) We all need to set the record straight, this doctor obviously does not know what he is talking about and is just trying to scare women into keeping their implants, or having them replaced if there are problems. Don't be fooled girls, if you want your implants out, go to a skilled surgeon (one that has lots of experience in explants,) and get those out! Your breast will look great! Let's stop scaring women into keeping their implants, who need to have them taken out due to health problems and other concerns. Better yet, lets not get implants in the first place! Learn to love your gorgeous natural breasts!

My breast look better with a lift and no implants, Then they ever did! The lift here last a LIFETIME! A dr/ps will ask if you want another pair, they make money too, just say no, and be grateful you made it out healthy and alive! And that you did not become sick!

There is no question that any type of breast (or other) surgery carries real risks. Occasionally, even if the surgery is undertaken for all the right reasons, and performed properly, problems and rarely disasters may occur. It is wrong to blame the patient for choosing breast augmentation, as hundreds of thousands of other women have happily done over the past four decades, with mostly good outcomes. It is equally wrong to assume that reputable plastic surgeons would coerce a woman into keeping or replacing her breast implants against the patient's wishes or best interest. Every patient must be treated individually with regards to the proper diagnosis and treatment options. Breast implants are "imperfect" devices we surgeons and patients employ in the hopes of creating or restoring the breast form that individual women desire for themselves; whether for reconstructive reasons after losing a breast to mastectomy, or purely for cosmetic vanity reasons because an individual does not "love her gorgeous natural breasts" because they're not "gorgeous". There is nothing wrong with freedom of choice, in this case the right of a woman to choose breast augmentation with implants, breast implant removal or replacement, or breast lift / reduction. Each of those choices has potential (but fortunately extremely rare) catastrophic outcomes. Our job as responsible plastic surgeons is to properly advise patients of the alternatives and risks of any given operation, to perform the operation with the utmost skill, and to treat the patient after surgery with compassion and diligence. Under the vast majority of circumstances, this results in excellent outcomes and happy patients.
