Ouch! Paintball Pops Woman's Breast Implant

Have breast implants? Then think twice before you go paintballing. Those put-in "pillows" may need some cushioning of their own -- and one British woman found out the hard way (no pun intended?).

Eight months ago, RealSelf member Mays Landing asked the doctors if her recent breast issues could be related to a paintball pelting.

"I recently was stuck in the left breast with a paintball. The same breast, now is experiencing a rash around the nipple," she says. "The breast appears the same size. Is there a chance of a slight leak in the saline implant due to the impact of the paintball?"

The doctors all agreed that it was unlikely her implant was leaking, as saline implants deflate very quickly. However, Wichita plastic surgeon Dr. Amy Sprole notes that "It is unlikely--but not impossible--that the blunt impact of a paintball would cause a saline implant to leak or deflate."

paintball pops breast implantFast forward to mid-August, 2011, and the BBC reported that a British woman's silicone implant ruptured after being hit by a paintball:

"She went to her doctor's surgery...where it was discovered one of her implants had been torn apart."

Although this is a rare occurance, the center where the woman was paintballing now has this on their website:

"We respectfully ask that any ladies with surgical breast implants notify our team at the time of booking. You will be given special information on the dangers of paintballing with enhanced boobs and asked to sign a disclaimer.

"You will also be issued with extra padding to protect your implants while paintballing."

The unnamed woman is said to make a full recovery. Good thing she caught it early, as a saline rupture won't harm your body, but leaking silicone can have some side effects.

The urban legend of Paintball v. Fake Boob has finally been set straight, but can implants withstand a plane ride
