LIP FILLERS

Expert injectors use lip fillers to blur lip lines and create subtle volume, balance, definition, and refined borders. Duck lips are out, but shapely pouts are definitely in.

Lip fillers can be injected into the upper and lower lips. In the hands of an experienced, artful injector, this popular cosmetic treatment can:

  • add volume
  • correct unbalanced or uneven lips
  • lift the corners of the mouth
  • define the Cupid's bow
  • enhance the lip border
  • hide excessive gingiva (commonly called a gummy smile)
  • smooth lip lines

“When administered by a provider with expertise in injection technique, lip fillers can give either very natural and subtle results or a dramatic change that still works in harmony with your features,” says Dr. Douglas Wu, a board-certified dermatologist in San Diego.

Providers can use several different types of fillers in lip augmentation procedures, but the gold standard is hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers.

The type of hyaluronic acid dermal filler used in your treatment will depend on your desired outcome and your provider’s preferences. According to  Dr. Sheila Barbarino, a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon who trains other providers in injectable filler techniques, the most popular options for lip augmentation come from the Restylane and Juvéderm lines of filler.

  • JuvĂ©derm Ultra XC is known to add volume for a pillowy effect. “For many years, it was the only hyaluronic acid filler on the market,” notes Dr. Barbarino.
  • JuvĂ©derm Volbella XC adds volume while also smoothing vertical lip lines for up to a year.
  • Restylane is a classic formula that can add or restore natural-looking lip volume.
  • Restylane Silk, a formula with smaller hyaluronic acid molecules, offers more subtle enhancement and lasts about six months.
  • Restylane Kysse plumps lips and diminishes wrinkles (aka smoker’s lines) along the vermillion border of the lips. Kysse contains lidocaine, to ease discomfort during treatment. Results last up to a year.

RealSelf Tip: Some providers offer liquid silicone fillers, like Silikon 1000, but be aware that the product is not FDA-approved for cosmetic use. Results are permanent, making it a more cost-effective option than using temporary fillers over time. But silicone carries a risk of serious side effects, including tissue death, if your provider accidentally injects it into a blood vessel. Silikon 1000 can't be dissolved, so the results are irreversible, and it's nearly impossible to remove. Some RealSelf members have reported that their silicone filler migrated below the lip line over time. For these reasons, most doctors on RealSelf strongly recommend sticking with dissolvable options.
