Fat injections
Fat injections, fat augmentation, soft tissue augmentation and fat transfer is a plastic surgery technique where fat from your body ("harvested") is injected into areas of the body needing volume, such as scars.
- Fat injection has been performed by plastic surgeons for decades to give a more natual appearing augmentation.
- A problem with fat injection procedure is the resorption or breakdown of the injected fat, so that the resulting improvement is not permanent.
- To persist, the injected fat must gain its own blood supply in its new location. Surgeons believe this is not possible when large amounts are injected at once and when specialized instrumentation and techniques are not employed.
- Plastic surgeons are now employing a fat injection technique that uses a greater percentage of live fat cells, and which may increase survival when injected.
- To undergo fat injection you need to have unwanted fat somewhere else on your body for harvesting. Some patients are too thin to make this a practical technique.
