Many patients after massive weight loss present to me with the common problem of having a lot of excess skin in the upper arm area. A lot of people describe it as the bat wing deformity of the upper arm. The procedure of choice for that is generally an arm lift procedure, also known as a brachioplasty.
Traditionally the scar from an arm lift was placed in the medial aspect of the upper arm. I actually don't like putting a scar in that area. I prefer to place the scar actually in the shadow line, in the posterior portion of the upper arm. I do feel that area is the best to camouflage a scar. There are some limited scar techniques for patients that have minimal amounts of excess skin. For those patients that have severe excess skin winging down, really, a brachioplasty, or upper arm lift, is the procedure of choice to really contour and shape your upper arms.
