Adult (mid 40's) Had Braces for 22 Months, Now Have Loose Teeth - West Palm Beach, FL

My teeth were not noticeably messed up. Everyone asked why I was even getting braces. My bottom teeth were the problem as they were "tipping" inward due to lack of space. I also had one on the bottom front that was getting crowded out. So I was told I would end up losing many teeth if I did not have braces to straighten them out and then jaw surgery and then continue with braces for another 7 months after the surgery. My teeth look a little better but no one besides me sees the difference. The reason I regret getting braces and of course the jaw surgery (see my other review) is that my front top and bottom teeth have lost significant roots because of the braces being moved too fast. I have "root blunting" so my teeth are LOOSE now! I've had to have a permanent retainer put in on the bottom and have to wear a retainer at night on the top for the rest of my life. I can take my finger and move my front and bottom teeth back and forth. I underwent all of this to prevent losing teeth and now here I am with a worse scenario. I'm very disappointed and wish i could go back in time. My braces have been off for 6 months now and I thought they would feel tighter but they are still quite loose.

I'm so sad to hear this, on top of all your jaw surgery woes.  I somehow missed that this jad happened as well!

buy your self a jawcerciser x
May 27, 2015
THank you! Have you tried it?
May 27, 2015
yes I really like i currently have braces Past year and 4 months. Jawcerciser helps loose teeth get firmer, creates salivia which cleans the teeth they are great try them they dont cost that much get the white one it will last longer they may help your teeth to get firmer and less loose

Thank you very much. I will give it a try

I thought about it more the pink jawcerciser would suit you better its much softer the white one is probably too hard for you teeth you could also try progesterone cream as its good for building bones

Root resorption is not caused by moving teeth "too rapidly.". This is a false belief held by many even in the dental profession. Furthermore, you won't lose your teeth due to the shortening that I see here. Tooth movement is mediated my inflammation.... And everyone's body reacts differently to Orthodontics. There are some risk factors, but most of the time when it occurs it is not anticipated. The good news is you won't lose your teeth because of the shortening of the roots.
Furthermore this should have been discussed before you started Orthodontics and you should have signed an informed consent agreement. In other words you should have been aware of the risk of root shortening before you initiated orthodontic treatment. Likely there will be a signature on a form that will outline these and other risks.
Also shortly after your braces are removed it's completely normal to have extra mobility in the teeth especially the front teeth. This should start to resolve in a few months and 6 months post treatment should be barely noticeable from pretreatment unless most of the root is gone. Orthodontically induced root resorption does not continue once the braces are removed, so if the shortening continues to get worse it definitely wasnt the braces. There are a many endocrine disorders that can also cause shortening of the roots of the so be aware of that . Hope this helps.

Like what? What endocrine disorders cause root shortening? Im looking at getting braces at age 53-55. I have hypothyroid, adrenal insuffiency(and take hydrocrotisone). And also take thyroid meds. I take a lot of supplements but not calcium or vitamin k. Im scared of causing myself further health problems. But my front teeth are slanted. Im ashamed of how i look. Orthodontist today suggested jaw surgery. Just read OT post about the jaw surgery, not the failed braces and im totally freaked out. And sad.

Severe root loss from braces

Melissa jake
Braces have been off for 9 months. Teeth continue to be lose. Only the important ones like the front 4 on both the top and the bottom. I went to dentist for routine X-rays and was sickened by the amount of "root blunting" that only happens from orthodontic braces moving the teeth too quickly. I'm hoping someday they develop a way to add to the roots.

Did they explain how it had happened?  I thought that with braces they were careful so that this would not happen.

Yeah...these are the basics that should have been known

After reading about your problems I don't feel quite so annoyed at the slow approach my orthodontist is taking. He refused to use the Acceledent to speed up the movement because I've had periodontal problems in the past.
You should be on a super bone building program (calcium, D3, K2, magnesium etc) to encourage better bone growth. Teeth are just bones that you can see.

What ended up happening? Did your loose teeth improve? Did you have to get implants?

I wanted to point out to others who may be reading this that root resorption (“blunting”) can occur whether the tooth are moved quickly or slowly, and usually has more to do with genetics than a mistake the ortho made. we are more likely to have this the older we are when we move our teeth. General bone loss in the supporting jaw is also more likely as we age and get orthodontic work. There is really no way to predict who will and won’t have adverse reactions to the movement.
