I had a terribly deviated septum and difficulty breathing, as well as some cosmetic issues with my nose (a bump and also it was not centered on my face).
I had a septo-rhinoplasty with Dr. Houtan Chaboki at GW Hospital in Washington, DC. I should have done this 20 years ago but I decided to do it because I got a recommendation to Dr. Chaboki from some doctors I know at GW who said he was the best. I was also getting married in 6 months. Between these two things, it was time.
The procedure itself was fine - I was asleep, obviously. I took my pain medical religiously afterwards just in case - but I never had any real pain and stopped after a couple days, even though they had to break my nose to move it centrally on my face. I had minimal bruising and some bleeding, which was expected. I took a week off work, mainly because I did not want to go to work with a cast on, though I felt OK. I was a little tired from the surgery for a few days.
The month or so after the surgery, the swelling went down and the stitches inside my nostrils (he does a technique where the only incisions are in the nostrils - none outside) were dissolving and healing up. I had some discomfort but nothing major. My nose also felt a little bit numb in places - but everything just kept improving over time.
The best part? I could BREATHE! For the first time ever! It was glorious :)
6 months out, I really don't have a single negative thing to say. I am functionally much better - I can breathe, I no longer have post-nasal drip that was giving me a cough, and I did not get a stuffy nose once this entire winter, which used to happen all the time. My nose feels almost normal.
Cosmetic-wise, it looks great! I look like myself, but a bit better, which was the goal. My nose is straighter and the bump is smaller - I just feel slightly prettier than before and less self-conscious about my profile especially. I can definitely notice the difference but I have good friends who said they would never even notice if I hadn't told them!
All in all, I am 100% satisfied I did this and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. But I am glad I waited until I found the right surgeon and Dr. Chaboki was it - he was awesome - very talented, subtle, and also very personable.
