Well, I only had 3 trays left to go, (total of 23) and I noticed that one tooth had a country mile left to move. The last 3 are over-correct trays and that tooth was far from ready for over-correction. I looked at my tray and sure enough there was a divot in the plastic tray but no attachment on the tooth. I had thrown away the other 18 sets of trays because they were in the way and I was going on vacation. There was no way for me to know at what point the attachment should have been added. Went to the dentist. I said that the tooth was too crooked at first to add and attachment and that it should have been added at some point along the line. She thought that it had broken off. She tore my Invisalign box apart and sure enough, under the cardboard was the mold that showed where the new attachment was to be placed...tray 15. She apologized for doubting me. The dentist put on the attachment with tray 20 as the guide and also did something to the divot to make it tighter on the attachment. Now, she said when this round of Invisalign was over, that I would have to start over again! New molds, new trays. grrrrrr. I guess this is going to go on longer than I had planned. So, my advice to you people who have Invisalign or planning on getting it: Have the practitioner take apart the box all the way to the cardboard outer shell to make sure nothing is hiding in there and re-assemble it. It's your mouth...and your money. Also, SAVE all your old Invisalign trays. Put them in a bag and throw them in a drawer somewhere till your treatment is all over and done with. I realize that the odds of probability of this happening to anybody else besides me is infinitely close to zero but it's not a bad idea to do and will only take 10 seconds. I think that what part of this forum is about is learning from other peoples' issues and trying to prevent negative consequences. It's still no big deal. I am happy to live in a country that has dentists, and that I can afford dental treatment.
You're totally right about saving all the aligners, though! My doctor told me to do that, and I still have them, even though I've been in retainers for over a year and a half. Better safe than sorry. :( Still, I'm not entirely certain you'd have been better off keeping them in your case. A mid-course correction should be more effective than having to go back five trays or whatever. They're not making you pay as well, are they? It doesn't seem like it….
