53 year old breast cancer survivor. No...

53 year old breast cancer survivor. No mastectomy, a lumpectomy with wide excision. Had silicone implants 9 years ago. The right one encapsulated. Finally I am scheduled for my revision in one week. I cannot wait. I've been in pain for 5 years not knowing what was wrong. My PS says he's going to have to use slightly larger implants due to the pockets expanding. That's fine with me! I'm going to attempt to upload a picture. You can see how the right one is higher and contracted.

Hi Did you have your implants put in before you had the lumpectomy? Did you have radiation? I had a lumpectomy and radiation to my affected breast and over 2 years time the radiated breast has become very encapsulated. I am going to have my implant replaced BUT my doctor told me that I should have stem cell fat grafting first in order to make sure that the radiated tissue doesn't just cause another encapsulation. I hope that your MD has addressed this IF it is applicable.

I had my first set of implants put in 5 years after my diagnosis of Breast Ca. This time around my PS has me on Singulair for three months. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it does not happen again. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for your reply!! Wow...so you have the contracture on the side that received radiation even though it was put in 5 years later..I am assuming it's on the lumpectomy/radiated side since you are getting the singulair...that may work. My PS had me try the singulair to get rid of the current contracture and it did nothing BUT...it was already contracted. The singulair may work better as a preemptive medication. Ask your PS about the stem cell method...though this is kind of long and drawn out...3 months before they harvest and inject fat into the breast that has the radiated cells. The stem cells (from your own fat) stimulate growth of healthy tissue that then is more accommodating/receptive and will be to the new implant. I wish you the best of outcomes!

If the CC happens again (ugh) I'll be sure to ask him about the stem cells. My problem right now is I keep spitting out stitches!! Every week I go back for more coming through. And it's happening in the left breast the one that didn't have the cancer???
January 3, 2015
OH...so it's not the result of radiation. I just assumed it was!! That is what caused my implant to get all contracted. Did you have radiation?
January 3, 2015
I had radiation on my right side. You have a higher incidence of getting CC on a radiated Breast. My left one never became encapsulated. For some reason tho that side is spitting out stitches!
January 4, 2015
oh...I see. Thank you for clarifying!!! My radiated breast is the one that got encapsulated. From your recent surgery..not quite sure what you mean by spitting out stitches!! Hope all goes well from now on!

These tiny sutures are coming to the surface, I have to go back to the PS and he clips them. I've had three on the right and about four on the left. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there's not any more.

Thank you! Sounds like you are on the all's well end of things!!!

All that sounds pretty normal. Best thing for you is to sleep alot and don't do too much for a few days.
