Outstanding

Hearing the words breast cancer can really turn your world upside down. Dr. Barone and his wonderful staff provided not only excellent care during this difficult time in my life but were also very reassuring, understanding and supportive of everything I had to go thru. I had to make the agonizing decision of lumpectomy followed by 6 weeks of radiation therapy vs bilateral mastectomy followed by reconstruction. After researching my specific type of cancer, high grade Apocrine type, I felt my safest option was the mastectomy with reconstruction.
Dr. Barone started my reconstruction immediately after my mastectomy in April, with insertion of tissue expanders. I spent the next few months getting them filled in the office, until they were to the size of my liking. I took 8 weeks off of work at that point and had no complications and was pleasantly surprised that I was still able to enjoy my summer doing the things I love like riding my bike, working out and even vacationing, with the expanders.
Five months later, I had my final surgery, replacing the tissue expanders with the gel filled silicone implants. At this time, Dr. Barone also performed a complete abdominal liposuction and did a fat transfer around the implants to make them softer and more realistic. I have mild scoliosis with a challenging chest wall so the fat transfer really helped mask my bony deformities. It has been 6 weeks now and I have to admit that I am a little disappointed in the amount of fat that has gotten reabsorbed by my body, which is out of Dr. Barone's control. However, my breasts still look nice and feel soft to the touch.
The final surgery was a quicker recovery, with little to no pain to the breast area, and a little soreness to the abdomen from the liposuction that was very tolerable. I was back to work in just 4 weeks. The one thing I will recommend is to buy your compression garment a few sizes larger than you would normally buy to accommodate for the post op swelling. I ended up buying 2 different sizes and downsizing as the swelling subsided. I have to say that the liposuction was an uplifting experience and bonus, after the very emotional journey I had been thru, and helped lift my overall spirits.
I would highly recommend Dr. Barone and his staff for anyone faced with breast reconstruction after breast cancer. His knowledge, experience and expertise are evident and his bedside manner is wonderful.
