FESS, Turbinoplasty and Septoplasty

44 year old male with a long history of frequently recurring upper respiratory infection, sinus infections and bronchitis. 3 month back had a very bad Sinus Infection that resulted in complete nose blockage, inability to breath and extreme pressure on ear and left maxillary sinus. Underwent multiple consultations, CT Scans with different ENT specialists. Everyone had a new story to tell, some said that it is bacterial, others said it is simply allergy, others said it is viral, and in the end Fungal was diagnosed.

Lastly went to an ENT specialist one month back who diagnosed me with reverse squeeze maxillary fungal sinus infection, hypertrophied turbinate and deviated septum. Got the surgery done 10 days back. Had the septum corrected with splints removed after 5 days of surgery. Started doing saline nasal rinse with Pulmicort after splint removal. Horrible experience with nasal rinse. Severe pain in maxillary sinus, extreme headache and nausea, dizziness and vomiting. My ears are totally blocked and there is a lot of pain and pressure. Today is the 10th day after surgery and I am extremely disturbed by the vertigo, dizziness and nausea. Went to see the doctor, however he said that this is normal and gave me codeine. Even codeine is not working. Vertigo, Dizziness and Nausea is much worse than the original illness and surgery itself.

Browsing the internet shows that it is probably the Eustachian tube which is under pressure because of nasal swelling. Since the past two days I feel like I am rocking in a boat, even with my eyes closed there is a heavy feeling in my head. Most of the internet literature says that this will automatically go in "few" days, but what is few days? 1,5,10,100 days?

My advice to people who are undergoing similar surgery, ask zillion questions from the doctor particularly what could be the main after effects post-surgery. And what needs to be done. Unlike me, who has to run to the doctor every time I feel severe headache, nausea, dizziness, only to be told that this is normal. There are medications for each and everything, so it is better to get them aligned before hand.

Doctor Patient relationship and selection is very important. Post operative interaction is very important as compared to pre-operative interaction. Ask questions, prepare lists, so that you don't end up in a black hole suffering from confusion whether this is "normal" or not, and when to go the doctor, and what is the threshold.
