I have never, ever written a review of a doctor or well, anything except maybe something on Amazon. But here I am, telling my story. All surgery is an act of faith, and a huge act of faith to leave the country to have it done. Needless to say, it was not an easy decision. But it was the best decision of my life, and believe me, I have not made many good decisions. This has been a very rough few years for me and it showed in my face. It was like the sadness was pulling my actual face down. So I took a deep breath and, facing my 60th birthday I decided I could no longer look at the sad me. Choosing Dr. Lev was the easy part. I will tell you he is a professional, but more than that he is a kind human being that knows we are all scared and all in need of reassurance.

So off to Costa Rica I went, by myself. I stayed at Che Tica Recovery Ranch, which was another wonderful decision. Up in the mountains, it is quiet and comfortable. The staff is so loving and concerned. I had my own little cottage with all the amenities. There are 80 acres to wanders with sheep, wild horses, two silly golden retrievers and two even sillier cats. Some will complain about traffic noise. I came prepared with a white noise machine but truthfully I never needed it. I didn't hear anything. There is a 20 minute drive into the heart of San Jose which turned out to be one of my favorite things, riding with the staff and having great conversations. And trust me, you do not want to be in the heart of San Jose while recovering. It is not peaceful.

So I met Dr. Lev and we discussed everything about the procedure. He asked/told me exactly where each cut would be and what to expect. He asked me over and over if I had any questions. A bunch of his patients came with me from the ranch and they were like my cheerleading team. The morning of the surgery Ruben, the owner of the ranch took me to CIMA hospital, which is gorgeous, btw. He held my hand and walked me in, introduced me to the reception staff. There was no 'drop and run'. Eventually I met my anesthesiologist, Dr Greenwald, who explains everything he is doing as he does it and makes you laugh all the way through. Then Dr. Lev came in and marked up my face. Then we went into the operating room where Dr. Lev introduced all the people in the room to me. All little magic juice and I woke 5 hours later. I had paid for a private nurse, which is a very good idea.

I spent the night wrapped in a cocoon of cotton and ace bandages. The next day the ranch nurse, Francis came and picked me up and home I went. The next day I had to go to Dr. Lev's office where he changes my bandages and removed the stitches from my eyes. He said he didn't leave them in more than one day so there was no scaring or cysts. I was very embarrassed to go to his office because it is upstairs of a big modern mall. So two of the patients from the ranch and Ruben came with me. One man on each arm we paraded through the mall. It was hysterical. Over the next week or so I healed very quickly. I am home now. My face is still very swollen and I still have some raccoon eyes but the change is amazing. I got a little scared because my neck stopped swelling but under my chin is still hard as a rock, making it look a little strange. I emailed Didi, Dr. Lev's liaison and within a few hours Dr. Lev emailed me, reassuring me about swelling and what to do. I felt so much better. So I am taking the time to write this because internet opinions can make or break a doctor in this day and age. In February I am going back to do body work (I lost 150lbs) and I will only work with Dr. Lev.

wow at only your 4th day you looked 25 yrs younger/// you sure are a strong lady going all by your self /// and was that 8000 us
November 23, 2014
Thanks for the kind words. Yes that was 8000 us. That included everything except the recovery ranch which was 1100 us for 14 days. I could have saved 2200 (2000 for the hospital and 200 for the private nurse) if I had used the clinic instead of Cima hospital but I don't think that was the place to scrimp. I am not a youngster and if anything went wrong I wanted the best emergency care.

This is really fabulous. I'm ready to go right now. Actually I'm going to need to save for about 2 years. What I'm afraid of, for going out of the country vs. having it done here, is the possibility of something not healing normally but not having my doctor handy to examine and either calm me down or do a revision. It would be so helpful if you check in and let us know how you are healing and if there are any scary times in the future where you wished you'd have stayed local. You look great.

Hi lucy. I will be very happy to check in. I am scheduled for three procedures over one month in February due to a huge weight loss so I will be around. I understand your concern about leaving the country. Several things made me comfortable with going out of the country to Dr. Lev. Here are some of them; 1. Many of the international places will do two and three surgeries a day. They do this by teaming the doctors. Dr. Lev works alone and uses the same anesthesiologist for all his work. He only does one surgery per day and is extremely meticulous. 2. Dr. Lev requires that you stay in Costa Rica for a minimum of 14 days after the surgery to ensure you don't go home with any complications. This is something none of the other doctors required and I saw many patients leave looking like a prize fighter who lost the prize. 3. When you meet Dr. Lev he tells you EXACTLY what to expect, where the cuts will be etc. If he feels it is the wrong surgery he will not do it. For instance, I want a leg lift due to my weight loss. He refuses because he says that it is a problematic surgery that does not last. 4. He is very cautious about the length of time he will allow a person to be 'under'. So when I go back in February he insisted I need a week between surgeries. 5. He has a fabulous liaison that makes sure you get everything you need (and more). Her name is Didi and anyone that meets her adores her. She is American, lives in L.A. but comes to CR to meet all the 'out of country' patients. She loves her job, admires Dr. Lev and really cares about the patients. Now why I picked Costa Rica as opposed to Thailand or other places is simple. Costa Rica is very 'Americanized'. You don't feel as far away from home, many many people speak English and the people in general are fabulous, kind people. Another reason I picked CR is it is clean, the humidity is low, the air is good. The airfare is reasonable. And in general you read less problems with reviews from that country as opposed to say the Dominican Republic. But in the end it is an act of faith. Isn't all surgery an act of faith, whether you are in the US or CR or Xanadu? Do your research, not just on this site, but everywhere you can. Speak to former patients and then make an informed decision. Lastly I will tell you, Dr. Lev is not the cheapest surgery you can get in CR, but in the end you get what you pay for, be it on Park Ave or Costa Rica. Good luck in whatever decision you make.

I think you don't look a day over 35!! honest! I'm having surgery with Dr Lev on 3/5 but I'm staying with Mercedes in her home. When are you returning to the states?
February 5, 2015
if everything goes as planned I will go home on 3/13. But it is a lot of procedures so who knows....... Casa Mercedes seemed like a nice place but the wrong fit for me. I'm a wanderer and need to walk. Good luck with your procedure.

I still have swelling under my chin (it's still hard) but looks great. The thing I am happiest about is I don't have that unnatural pulled back look. There is a little slope under my neck which makes it look natural. I mean, nobody has NOTHING under their chins, right? But the goose neck is gone, gone, gone. The incisions throughout my hair have un-numbed which is good and bad. Good that I am getting feeling back, but.....ouch, they are tender. My eyes came out perfect and I think that made the most difference in my look. One thing that surprised me was how tired I have been since coming home. I guess when you are at the recovery facility everything is taken care of for you and you don't realize how weak you are. But coming home, I have been very tired. I can't imagine the people that have these procedures done and go straight home to fend for themselves. I couldn't have done it.

I see that you stayed at CheTica. I looooooved by long stang with them. They were my angels. When were you there?
December 4, 2014
No, I went by myself. Just got back a week ago.
December 4, 2014
You look amazing. Do you see your younger self there? To me you look like a totally new person.
December 4, 2014
thanks, so do you! ( I looked at your pics). I am still having really hard swelling under my chin. It makes me nervous but I'm sure I am just a slow healer. I also had a large amount of work done under my chin so I guess it's traumatized.
December 4, 2014
I know by experience that having a facelift makes you somehow see look at every fault you have, but you really need to step back and see the overall miracle. I am truly blown away by your results. Many people will be inspired to have worked done, just based on your photos. With regard to your chin: I only had one stitch, under my chin (Dr. Arguello uses a different/newer approach to a neck lift), but even so, I could feel the little bump until week 11, just to give you perspective. It was nice "talking" to you. We have Ruben, Lorena, Francis, Costa Rica, ... in common (smile).

I have a 2 inch scar under my chin. Beautiful work and I am using silicon bandaids which reduce scaring. Its just this swelling which came after the pics. Dr. Lev called and assured me it is just swelling from the extensive work and it will go down. I know I am be ing neurotic. Anyway I am going back to Che Tica in February for a body lift (3 surgeries) so I know I will see Dr. Lev again so it keeps me from worrying too much.
December 4, 2014
Good. I may get to see you at CheTica. I have to go back for dental work. You may want to try a silicon gel, and the pad. I use ScarAway. The gel tends to get you better contact and cross-linking, especially on smaller scars.
December 4, 2014
I will be there from 2/16 - 3/13. Hope to meet you. Thanks for your support.
December 4, 2014
Where you at CheTica with your husband?
January 28, 2015
no I went by myself but there were several who did.
