so thrilled with my results
I found Dr. Portuese on Instagram and was instantly sold on his work. He always goes for a natural nose that fits the patient. I've been wanting to do rhinoplasty since I finished high school but would always chicken out because I was afraid I wouldn't look like myself or that everyone would know blah blah blah. Ten years later I finally committed with Dr. Portuese.
I'm Middle Eastern and had a large hump, wide nose, and tip plunged on smiling. My nose was just too large for my face. It was the first thing you saw from any angle and laughing made it look worse because it would get very wide and the tip would droop. I didn't want a small nose, I still wanted my ethnicity to show and Dr. Portuese echoed my sentiments entirely and confidently assured me that he would maintain that in my face.
I traveled out of state for this procedure. The day of surgery came and I was a nervous wreck. I kept thinking "am I making a mistake? there's no going back from here..." etc etc. But the staff could not be nicer. Every single person. The anesthesiologist was incredibly patient as I drilled him with questions. Dr. Portuese came in, looked at my nose (first time meeting in person), and walked me through his plans. Our meeting was quick, I was surprised we didn't talk longer but this was a surgery day, he had other patients on the schedule. Once we were done talking, that was it. The anesthesiologist started the IV and one of the nurses could see how nervous I was so she stood next to me and held my hand. I was so nervous that I cried a little. She saw this, went and grabbed a kleenex and wiped my tears while I was laying there. I felt so cared for. Both her and the anesthesiologist kept talking to me, telling me what I should be feeling and then that's it. Last thing I remember saying was, "I just want to look like myself." Next thing I knew, I was up and couldn't believe it was done. I was so happy and relieved. I would say from walking into the office to leaving, it was just under 2.5 hours.
During recovery, I was never in any pain. Never touched the pain meds and the only time I took Tylenol was because I had a headache. But rhinoplasty isn't an easy recovery. For me, it felt like I had the flu. I couldn't taste anything for at least four days. Obviously, your nose is swollen inside and out and so breathing is very congested for the first week (I'm six weeks post op and still a bit congested, but can breathe through my nose at 80% I'd say).
A week later Dr. Portuese took the splint off. Not painful at all, the tape just peels right off and he's very gentle as he does this. He gave me the mirror and I burst out crying when I first saw my new nose because ALL I COULD SEE WAS MYSELF. I LOOKED LIKE MYSELF BUT WITH A NOSE THAT FIT MY FACE - all I ever wanted. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I was ecstatic. He did exactly what he said he would do. I can't explain what that felt like. He gave me a steroid shot, which again didn't hurt. Feels exactly like getting a shot in your arm except the tip of your nose is still numb so you really don't feel anything at all.
Dr. Portuese - I can't thank you enough and I can't convey how happy I am with the results. It looks amazing and I feel amazing. This is the perfect nose for my face and you kept my identity and ethnicity just as it was. Thank you endlessly to you and everyone working in your office.
