Sliding Genioplasty - Great Results by Dr. Jamali
Realself has really helped me to find the right surgeon and to learn about chin surgery. So, I want to give back to the community by sharing my experience.
I have noticed that I have a receded jaw and a very small chin few years back and since then I have been looking for procedures online for enhancing my chin. I always came across two popular procedures sliding genioplasty and chin implant, while chin implant being more popular and widely offered solution. I never really liked the idea of having some silicone artificial thing in my face so I did more research towards sliding genioplasty. Looking at the procedure, at first it really scared me, physically cutting bone and sliding it seemed more complex and more risk taking. After reading a lot of reviews on Realself and looking some before after pictures made me comfortable moving forward with sliding genioplasty. And for this procedure I always came across Dr. Jamali to be an expert, so many great reviews on realself and on other websites, and now after my surgery I can say he is indeed the best. First Skype consultation: I don’t live in NY so I scheduled a Skype consultation and spoke with Dr.Jamali few months back. As I have been doing so much research and reading other reviews who got procedure done from Dr.Jamali, I only had very few questions to ask and he was very clear and helpful on clearing those out. Dr. Jamali said that I should get a jaw surgery to get the projection I needed as my overall lower jaw is very small, but since its a long procedure with more prep time and healing time and also, at my current circumstances I cannot really get that procedure so I opted for sliding genioplasty as I was already been preparing for that. I asked if the chin can be advanced 10mm forward, for that he mentioned its gonna be risky as the bone needs to be touching, usually 8mm or 9mm is the max we can go he said. I also wanted to increase the height so asked about that as well, and he suggested to take X-rays first to see how much we can move horizontal and vertical. And then we discussed about payment, booking surgery, post recovery healing, risks involved etc. I was really happy with the consultation and soon scheduled my surgery for October 8th.In-person consultation with X-rays: As I don’t live in NY, I scheduled my surgery first but then I also scheduled an in-person consultation right before the surgery date because I just wanted to see what I can expect. I flew to NY, met Dr. Jamali at his office, he was really nice, cordial and very well mannered. He took couple of X-rays and after looking at them he told me 5mm or 6mm is the max we can go horizontally and 3mm vertically. To be honest, I was really disappointed at this point as I was expecting more projection. I have been looking at other before after photos and for me it always seemed the results of 5mm or 6mm to be ok but 8mm to 9mm to be very significant, so I was having all these numbers in my head the whole time and expecting to get the higher end. So anyone who is reading this review, I want to tell you something as I couldn’t find much information about this particular thing. I always read about how much mm others got advanced but never knew why or what are the limitations. Basically, how much your chin can be moved forward/downward will be based on how thick your chin bone is, so it will be only known after you have an in person consultation with X-rays. Please don’t go with so much expectations, let the doctor tell you what can done and what is possible and decide from there. Apparently, my bone is thin so Dr. Jamali said 5mm or 6mm is what we can achieve without having the risk of bones not touching/healing.He drew my face outline projecting after surgery results (Red line, please see the image). Looking at that, I was kinda happy that it would still improve my jaw line and chin, and reduce my double chin as well. I also told to Doctor that there is some asymmetry in my chin and wanted him to check, he instantly listened and took another X-ray and also used a thread to check if it needs correction, and then decided to move 3mm to my left. Dr. Jamali said he will do his best to add more projection during the surgery and I left the office, hoping for the best.Surgery day: I went a bit early to the surgery, waited there for some time. Had few questions on recovery so chatted with doctor for sometime and then it was surgery time. Surgery went pretty quick, I opened my eyes and my lips and chin area was taped really tight. At this point, I tried to touch my chin and lower lip and found that I have sensation. You won’t believe how happy I was knowing that most of my sensation is there right after the surgery (Don’t want to give any expectations here, everyone heals different and experience different). I didn’t have any pain but I had so much trouble swallowing. Maybe the oxygen tubes ruptured something I don’t know but that pain while swallowing was severe. Dr. Jamali said it will go away in a few days. I went back to my hotel took some medications, had some ice cream and slept. Some people take medication some may not but I suggest to take these prescribed medications from the doctor at least for the first 5 to 6 days. In my case, they really helped me to sleep well and relieved me so much from discomfort and pain. Had to be on a liquid diet for next 10 days.Day 5: I didn’t have much swelling after surgery. Only thing that was bothering so much was the tape on my face, I also didn’t take shower as that might wet the tape and make it come off. Dr. Jamali did a follow up call and asked me how I was doing and suggested I can remove the tape gently. When I took it off, I kinda liked how I was looking even though all of my lips and chin are tight but like many people say don’t judge right away, just give it some time. I found out there are two big lumps under my chin where the cut was made, these were really hard like stones. I don’t mind having the lumps but one lump was causing one side of my chin to have a step off but still it was a great improvement.Day 7: I had a follow up at doctor’s office. He checked my incision and advised me to be on liquid diet for few more days and said there is no infection and its healing well. Dr. Jamali said he was able to move 7mm forward 3mm down and 3mm to the left and he was also happy with the results. I asked about the lumps and he said they will go away in 2 or 3 months and they are pretty common in this surgery. I had few more questions on recovery and activities, he answered all very well and cleared all of my doubts.Day 10: At this point, I had zero swelling, at least as much as I can see and I am so happy with the results, especially from the front, how much it has changed my lower lip and added more vertical projection. I am comparing before after photos of myself and really really liking how I am looking now. People who know that I was getting this surgery done especially my family are so much pleased about the results and saying great things already (check my post op pics).Day 12: Still on liquid diet, tried to eat some soft food, but my lips are pretty tight and its really making hard to chew, so going to be on liquid diet for few more days and slowly start introducing soft foods. I am feeling 90% of my sensation back already in my face which I am super happy about and of course the results. Only thing I am bothered right now is the lumps as one of that causing a step off and I have some tightness and numbness on my lower front teeth and gums (4 teeth to be exact). I will give it some time and see how my recovery goes. I will be adding more updates as the time goes by. Feel free to comment or direct message me if you have any questions.

Provider Review
Dr. Jamali is very friendly, well mannered and exceptionally great. He was very sincere in explaining the procedure, results and risks to me and set true expectations. The fact that I am feeling almost normal just 10 days after surgery shows how competent and skilled surgeon he is, I cannot recommend him enough to anyone who needs a chin surgery. Office staff Nina also very friendly, helped me through out the process with scheduling, payments and she also did follow ups to see how I was doing. Dr. Jamali and staff are great 10/10.
