Consultation Review: Lip Lift
While looking for a lip lift surgeon, I came across Dr Orfaniotis based on his stellar reviews and great post-op photos. I should state clearly that this is not a review that in any way negates his abilities as a surgeon. It just details the bizarre experience that was consulting with him (or rather, with him through his secretary?). The details are as follows.
Our first videoconsultation was great. Dr Orfaniotis told me that I was a good candidate for a lip lift, that my fears of excessive incisor show were unnecessary since he can finesse the surgery, and that I was welcome to sleep on it, and then get back to him with any further questions. He was kind, forthcoming and very confident that my problem could be solved, which was A HUGE relief for me. After years of looking for a solution, here it was. Finally! So as instructed, I slept on it and realized I had a few more questions. I wrote them in an email and sent it to his administrator, Lian. This email consisted of the following: a question about the technical aspect of the LL (specifically, how it is possible to remove skin without showing more teeth), and an approximation of my desired result. Photos were also accompanied by this word, since these were photos of other people, and obviously could never be 'reproduced'. I just wanted us to completely understand one another. Additionally, I offered to either speak to him again or even come to London as typing is obviously not the easiest way to do this. Then I didn't hear from the clinic for a week, after which I received a rather vague email from his secretary, in which she informed me that "Mr Orfaniotis cannot guarantee to meet your expectations of surgery that you have explored and the outcome that you are looking to achieve", and that I should find a local surgeon.I was very surprised that he should have changed his mind so drastically, i.e. go from 'you're a great candidate' to 'he cannot guarantee the desired outcome'. Putting aside the fact that at no point was I requiring or expecting guarantees (I'm in my mid 30's, no illusions left here), this first reply left me with a really bad taste in my mouth. Who declines patients they initially accepted through their secretary? And with no further explanation, just like that?Since my initial memory of Dr Orfaniotis was positive, I decided to get to the bottom of it. I sent Lian another message, in which I explained, again, that I did not in fact have any particular wishes of exactly what "needs" to be achieved, or that I would ever need that guaranteed. In fact I chose Dr Orfaniotis doctor based on the great post-op pics of other patients, and anything close to those results would be great.Additionally, and most importantly, I asked that if I cannot speak (or meet) with Dr Orfaniotis again, that I should at least be given the reason for this 180: because if the reason is some physical contraindication that he only noticed after our consultation, it may be possible that the surgeon I will consult with next will overlook it, which could have bad consequences indeed. In other words, it was a bit like going to a doctor, and having the doctor tell you 'There's ... something. Good day.'Given that, I expected to receive an answer such as 'Dr Orfaniotis does not wish to operate on you because of X objective reason'. Frankly, I expected to be given an opportunity to speak to him and have him tell me that, but I would have also contented myself with the above.Instead, I got this:"Unfortunately, he is not able to assist in taking your enquiry forward to surgery. As previously noted you have very specific expectations and Mr Orfaniotis cannot guarantee to meet these through surgical intervention. All surgery has risks and the outcome and healing pathway can be very different and is patient specific."I cannot describe how angered and disappointed I was. Me 'having very specific expectations' is an outright lie and one poor cop-out.I can only HOPE Dr Orfaniotis just assumed wrongly about me, and did not in fact decide against helping me because there's some physical issue that could be problematic. I don't really know - AND THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM.A doctor who respects his patients, especially one that actively encourages them to ask questions, will have the decency to take 5 minutes of his time to explain why he went from 'absolutely yes' to 'absolutely no' in a week's time. And he most certainly won't waste their time by having them engage in a protracted email back-and-forth WITH HIS SECRETARY. It was really starting to sound like an absurdist play at times, where she kept telling me about what the suddenly invisible third party has decided. As the review title suggests, this was really both an unprofessional and bizarre experience.I can only hope that the rest of Dr Orfaniotis' patients don't have to go through this, and that his skills as a surgeon are much better than the clinic's customer care. Ultimately, I'm just disappointed that this opportunity to solve a long-standing issue was wasted due to such banal reasons.Should anyone need any further information, I would be happy to help.
